There are plenty of memes in Old School RuneScape and whether you’re old or new to the game you should be familiar with at least some of them. As a relatively new player myself, it’s been a treasure to discover OSRS memes and understand what’s behind them. 92 is half of 99 is a direct reference to the leveling system in Old School RuneScape.

Experience and levels in OSRS
According to the wiki “the amount of experience needed for the next level is approximately 10% more than the last level. For example, 83 experience is required for advancement to level 2, while 91 experience is required for advancement to level 3. Reaching level 99 in a skill requires a total of 13,034,431 experience. By around level 30, the exponential factor predominates, so that the amount of experience required doubles for each 7th level. Accordingly, level 92 is nearly the exact halfway mark to level 99, requiring 6,517,253 experience, and level 85 requires very nearly one quarter of the experience needed for level 99”.
Even more so, the rule that turned into the meme refers to all the levels above 40 since according to the graph level X is half of level X+7 works for all the levels above 40.
Surface level
At a surface level the math in 92+92=99 or 92X2=99 is incorrect, but this meme is built around the metaphor where 92 means 6,517,253 XP and 99 means 13,034,431 XP. Substituting the numbers in the equations with their XP values will not make both of the equations mathematically accurate since 6,517,253 + 6,517,253 = 13,034,506 (not 13,034,431) and 6,517,253×2 =13,034,506.
However, any amount of XP equal or larger than 13,034,431 is level 99 (the level cap in OSRS). This means that the mathematically accurate equations are 6,517,253 + 6,517,253 ≤ 13,034,431 and 6,517,253 x 2 ≤ 13,034,431.
Deeper level
Looking at a meme at a deeper level, even though 92 is not 100% the half way to 99, the number is close enough to make the small inaccuracy negligeable, especially that for most skills it wouldn’t take longer than a minute to get that amount of XP. The exact midpoint is still at level 91, but close enough (35.5 XP close) to 92, so that the whole community considers 92 to be the midpoint.
